the nervous neal advantage | why choose me?

primary vocation

Because private saxophone instruction is my primary vocation, I have the luxury of spending time beyond the lesson preparing transcriptions of jazz solos and contemporary songs on demand, mixing and mastering demo and audition recordings, and creating custom practice tracks.

professional performer

Having worked as a professional performing musician for over 35 years, I’ve toured extensively, signed recording contracts, and worked with musicians such as Alex Chilton, The Temptations, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Louis Bellson, Chuck Loeb, and have been featured as a soloist with the Quad City Symphony.

featured soloist

I’ve been featured as a soloist on over 50 commercially-available recordings as well as numerous radio and TV ads, with several of my original compositions being licensed for use on MTV, NBC Sports, and other cable TV networks and in independent films.

home studio

My home studio includes digital audio workstations available to students interested in composing, arranging, and recording. Live looping technology is available through Ableton Live Suite.

schedule accommodation

Three different attendance options are available to accommodate a wide variety of schedules.

allergy friendly

My studio is a smoke-free and animal-free environment so students with allergies can breathe easy.

welcoming studio

Students of every race, nationality, physical and mental ability, religious belief, political affiliation, and gender orientation or gender identity are welcome in my studio.

stocked waiting room

A waiting room adjacent to my studio is available to parents and siblings. It includes free wi-fi access, snacks and beverages.

new students!

I’m currently accepting applications for interested students aged 8 through adult. Lessons are tailored to the tastes and needs of each student, with traditional method books rarely used once the basics are under control. Instruction is based on a strong working knowledge of scales. The informed use of these scales leads to a heightened understanding of improvisation, ear training, and other practical aspects of music theory. Students are encouraged to choose from a variety of jazz standards and transcriptions, classical themes, and pop tunes that I’ve transcribed and engraved. Songs not already included in the Print Music Index can be transcribed on request, usually within a week. Rudimentary instruction is also available for saxophonists wishing to learn flute and/or clarinet.
